Instant Pot Southern Country Fried Steak Recipe

Instant Pot Southern Country Fried Steak Recipe
Sometimes it nice to have a good “meat and potatoes” dish for cold winter nights. Unfortunately, most of us don’t have a lot of time to cook on those cold winter nights. Instant Pots® have been around for a while now, and they are one of the best timesavers out there. What is usually a dinner that takes several hours in the slow cooker or oven can be completed in less than an hour in the Instant Pot, and this Southern Country Fried Steak (not to be confused with chicken fried steak which is entirely different) is no exception. It can be perfectly cooked to perfection in less than 30 minutes. I like to serve it with mashed potatoes and vegetables, and since Instant Pot Smashed Red Potatoes take only 12 minutes in the Instant Pot and require no peeling, they are the perfect accompaniment.

4 Servings

1 pound beef cube steaks
6 tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 medium onion, sliced

2 cups water
1 envelope onion soup mix

Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

  1. Cut the meat into serving sized pieces.
  2. Mix the flour, salt, and pepper; dredge the meat in the flour mixture.
  3. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in the Instant Pot on the sauté setting.
  4. Brown the meat on both sides.
  5. Sprinkle the onions over the meat and pour the water over; sprinkle the onion soup mix over all.
  6. Cover the pot, set the valve to sealing, and set on manual for 20 minutes.
  7. When the cycle is finished, release the pressure.
  8. Mix the remaining seasoned flour with 1/2 cup cold water and mix till smooth (I use my bullet blender to remove all lumps of flour).
  9. Stir into the gravy and cook on sauté until thickened.
  10. Taste for seasoning and add salt and pepper if necessary. Serve with mashed potatoes.
