Piranha

Susan P. Blevins

Last night I attended a recital
of monumental music by Liszt and Schumann
played by a slight wisp of a girl.
How someone so slender
could make such huge sound baffles me.

She bit the music from the piano
like I had never seen before,
she sank her teeth into the notes
with ferocious intensity.
My heart was racing
and I was breathless
as she devoured the music
until with trembling body
she reached the final climax,
emotions fulfilled and spent.

What intense connection through time and space
between composer, artiste and listener
Authentic, powerful, magical.

Thank you Hui Shan
I am still breathless two hours later.
